This is a story about how an ancient bus was transformed by a couple into a sanctuary fit for six people and countless fantasies. John revamped the bus with his artistic and skilled eye. Thanks to a well-thought-out pull-out bed, the living room—which has a U-shaped couch and concealed storage compartments—also serves as the parents’ bedroom.

The family’s electrical setup is a cutting-edge technological marvel. Beneath the living room couch are two 200 amp hour batteries, a 3000 watt inverter, and a Victron charge controller.

This robust system has enough energy for breakfast even after running an air conditioner nonstop during the night.  Ideal for a family who enjoys living off the grid and has lots of independence, right?

The practicalities of living on the road are also considered in the bus design. The living space and the “throne room,” which has a Nature’s Head composting toilet, are divided by a sliding door. The driver’s area at the front was arranged to accommodate the family’s close quarters.

The children are safely seated in two of the original bus seats, which are now fitted with shoulder belts, and AJ is comfortably positioned in a swiveling passenger seat. They love it so much! A well-stocked refrigerator and a kitchen that would make any home cook envious suffice to meet the family’s culinary demands.

A conventional stove is replaced with an induction cooktop and air fryer, which also fit the family’s predilection for electronic appliances. Even the light over the sink changes color based on the water’s temperature, bringing some fun elements into the functional area. Every drop of water the family drinks is made pure by the filter system, which is displayed proudly on the kitchen counter.

Living in a bus was not an impulsive decision. Eight years ago, after giving it some thought, they chose to remain on their farm in order to give their small children a stable environment.

Every family member gets a drawer for personal items, and the kids have happily embraced their separate bunk beds. The communal family bed on their farm was the prior arrangement, a far cry from the sleeping quarters.
